Have we met?

Ahem. Good day. I was in the area, so I felt it my duty to introduce myself. I think in this kingdom I am known as The Queen's Forest . (What a pretentious mouthful! I assure you this is not of my own doing. ) A little about myself, you say? Well only a short while ago I was a respectable 81 inches long. And before I knew it a steam iron was put to me (I must not be considered good enough for a Eucalan soak! What impudence!) and now I am a vertiginous 90 inches. What was that foul person thinking?!? I come from a long line of ancient peoples, known as Last Minute Knitted Gifts Chevron Scarves . I am a distinctly new variety. Rather than superwash merino, I am made of a unique mixture of 80% alpaca and 20% merino wool. I am in no way concerned that my brethren prefer to be made of BMFA STR . No, I am not. I am a unique flower and damn proud of it. Oh, I am so soft to the touch and visually distinctive, I dare say my benefactress had it right in naming me. Yes, I t...

Last week in yarn rescue, or is that knitting weakness?

About two weeks ago I spent a little time reading the discussion over at Ravelry about LYS etiquette on whether it is a store's obligation to wind yarn for customers or not. I totally got the feeling there is an urban east coast/rest of the US divide on this tradition. Another issue surfaced in the discussion and that was whether or not it is appropriate to store wound yarn for any length of time. I think the consensus was that tightly wound yarn cakes may alter the yarn and cause gauge problems when used later down the road; the longer the yarn is in tightly wound cake form, the greater the damage may be. Well, you see, I'm still a novice ball winder and sometimes my yarn cakes come out a little too tight. The slightest notion that my tightly wound cakes are destroying the beautiful yarn their made of ignited a flame in the quiet little corner of my mind where cast on projects are born. Let me add that this quiet little corner is kept quiet by constant vigilance. Slowly but s...

I'm still here, sorta

Blogging here feels like swimming through sand right now. Even reading other blogs has been slow going. There is knitting going on, but the details will have to be lost to time. Do you ever have dreams that are just circular, where you're doing the same thing over and over, and you feel half awake and aactually doing the thing you're only dreaming about over and over? Well last Friday I cast on the Chevron Scarf from Last Minute Knitted Gifts over and over and over in my sleep. It felt like the dream lasted all night. It was torturous waking up and not being able to actually cast on. IRL I kept the yarn safely in it's bin. I'll start when I'm finished with the ever lovely project stole.
